Ulrik Brandes is a professor for social networks in the Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences at ETH Zürich. With a background in computer science, he was a professor for algorithmics at the University of Konstanz 2003-2017, principial investigator of a DFG Reinhart Koselleck Project (2012-2017) and co-principal investigator of an ERC Synergy Project (2013-2019). Currently, he serves as head of department and as co-editor of the journal Social Networks. His main research area are the methodological foundations of network science. In 2024, he received the 2024 Simmel Award of the International Network for Social Networks for is lifetime achievements.
