Job description of Data engineer :
To become a Data Engineer, there aren’t many educational program choices. The simplest way is to start
with a preparatory class in IT then pursue an educational program (bac+5/A levels +5) in an “école
d’ingénieur” (a specialized engineer school) (CRESPA in Lyon, Télécom Nancy or Paris) and to start with
an option “Big Data” or “Data Science”.
The Data Engineer is in charge of creating data architecture systems. He develops, configures and
implements the architecture. Then, he organizes data flows. On a daily basis, he must ensure that the
data is up-to-date and well-documented. Companies usually ask to be in contact with the Product Manager
to take care of all requirements.
In order to carry out all the tasks, the Data Engineer uses database languages (SQL,...), masters
storage tools (Hadoop) and must understand the basics of Machine Learning, Deep Learning and Artificial
Intelligence. The Data Engineer is proactive, organized and reactive, and knows how to work in a team.
Data Engineer positions are quite common, they are numerous in large French cities such as Paris and
Lyon, but some are also found in smaller cities, such as Dijon. It is often requested by companies that
Data Engineer do IT monitoring in addition to the main missions. Most of the offers come from digitally
based companies.
